The Project

For several years, Mikaela Meredith and Savannah Rose have shared a practice rooted in the terrain of loss — grieving, gathering, weeping, laughing — slowly widening the understanding of how grief may be held and woven into the fabric of a creative community. Savvy's grounding in community arts practice and MK's immersion in fine art and the death profession have cultivated a rare and generative kinship, and from that kinship, a new work has emerged.

How to Participate

CONTRIBUTION

COLLABORATION

Bodies of Grief is a communal art process — and it requires you. We will trace 400 bodies onto a series of ten-foot canvases, each outline rendered in calligraphic ink, accumulating into a topographical map of human form layered upon human form. Alongside this, we are gathering 400 handwritten letters addressed to the deceased — each one transcribed onto tracing paper and laid over the canvas. Body and word, presence and absence, merging into one another as grief itself was always meant to be held: communally, visibly, and without erasure.

For tracing: Please reach out to Mikaela or Savvy to be traced in the RiNo studio! This will only take a few minutes.

To submit writing: Please write a handwritten expression of grief, a single sentence to a single page. This can be a letter or poem or phrase to someone you have lost, or an expression of how you currently relate to grief. Please write in black ink on white paper (ease of transcribing on trace paper).
